Power of the Purse

Throughout the year, YWCA Yakima hosts a variety of events designed to highlight our mission and raise funds for our programs. Power of the Purse raises funds for Financial Literacy, Education, and Empowerment for families who have experienced domestic violence in the Yakima Valley.

While less commonly understood, financial abuse is one of the most powerful methods of keeping a survivor trapped in an abusive relationship and deeply diminishes the victim’s ability to stay safe after leaving an abusive partner. Research indicates that financial abuse occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases. Financial abuse is devastating; the damage can last for months, years, and even decades.  
YWCA Yakima is committed to disrupting the cycle of relationship abuse. We provide survivors with the education and resources needed to achieve their potential again and equip young people with the information and confidence they need to help prevent unhealthy relationships before they start.
